Cisco is losing market share in Internet core routing, according to the latest figures from Dell'Oro Group.

According to Dell'Oro's data for the second quarter of calendar year 2000, Cisco's share dropped from 80.2% in the first quarter to 75.4% in the second quarter.

Juniper Networks was the main beneficiary of Cisco's decline. Juniper's share jumped from 17.3% in the first quarter to 22.4% in the second quarter, according to Dell'Oro.

Equally telling is the fact that Juniper grew at almost three times the rate of the market, while Cisco's growth rate lagged the market.

The worldwide market for Internet core routers grew 29% during the quarter, from $372.9 million to $477.9 million. Juniper's business grew 77% during the quarter, while Cisco's Internet core router business grew only 19%.

Third on the overall list was Avici Systems, which grew from 0.1% in the first quarter on revenue of $500,000, to 0.4% in the second quarter on revenue of $2.2 million, according to Dell'Oro. Avici leapfrogged Nortel and Ericsson to grab the No. 3 spot.
