Linux NetworX has bolstered its line of Linux servers for ISPs and application service providers with a clustered server environment aimed at increasing server uptime and minimizing failure in environments where downtime can't be tolerated or afforded.
The Evolocity 1240s take four Linux servers called compute nodes and arranges them into a fault-tolerant configuration that acts as a single computer so downtime is eliminated. Data is read and written to each computer in a compute node at the same time. If one member of the cluster fails, one of the other servers takes over immediately. The Evolocity 1240s package contains the servers, the network adapters for joining the servers into a cluster, and software.
Each compute module in the system handles a portion of each of the services. So if an individual module fails, only a small portion of overall capacity is lost, and there is never a threat of a single service being lost.
The Evolocity 1240s includes Apache Web server software, messaging software Sendmail and Secure Sockets Layer for conducting secure transactions. It also includes Secure Shell for remote access to the server cluster and a software-based firewall and load-balancing package for traffic management. The cluster is managed with cluster management software from Linux NetworX called ClusterWorX.
The cluster is rack-mountable and uses AMD Athlon processors and four server modules, each with 17 gigabytes of storage. A 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet adapter is included for connection to the network.
The Evolocity 1240s costs $20,000 and will be available next month.
