Edge router start-up Laurel Networks this week announced that Level 3 Communications has deployed Laurel's ST200 Service Edge Router for its Multi-protocol Label Switching-based Ethernet private line, ATM and Frame Relay service in the U.S. and Europe.

The router will be used to aggregate Ethernet, ATM and frame relay services and transport them across an MPLS backbone in a technique compliant with the Draft Martini specification for Layer 2 encapsulation in MPLS. Level 3 has used MPLS in its core network for two years; Laurel's routers allow the carrier to now deploy the technology at the edge.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Laurel routers will be deployed in 33 Level 3 points of presence.

Laurel is currently in trials with other carriers, including Cable & Wireless, according to sources.
