Motorola this week announced plans to acquire passive optical networking vendor Quantum Bridge in an all cash transaction.

Terms of the definitive agreement were not disclosed.

Motorola and Quantum Bridge are jointly bidding on the Fiber-to-the-Premises proposal put forth by three RBOCs. Quantum Bridge gives Motorola a PON-based fiber access system that broadband network operators can deploy to deliver "triple play" and next-generation advanced services.

The PON products will complement Motorola's digital video headend technology, which is deployed in over 2,060 systems worldwide, and transport infrastructure, access, and consumer premises equipment, including cable set-top boxes and modems.

The completion of the acquisition is expected to occur in the second quarter.
