Nortel taps Juniper's M&A chief as strategy head

Nortel has named former Juniper Networks strategy and business development chief George Riedel as its own chief strategy officer.

Riedel will be responsible for leading Nortel's corporate strategy, including business development, and mergers and acquisitions. In addition, Riedel will focus on emerging technologies, market opportunities, and strategic partnerships.

Riedel will report to Nortel President and CEO Mike Zafirovski.

Prior to joining Juniper in 2003, Riedel was a director at management consulting firm McKinsey and Company, where for 15 years he co-led telecom and high-tech practices in North America and Asia.

Riedel will be responsible for leading Nortel's corporate strategy, including business development, and mergers and acquisitions. In addition, Riedel will focus on emerging technologies, market opportunities, and strategic partnerships.

Riedel will report to Nortel President and CEO Mike Zafirovski.

Prior to joining Juniper in 2003, Riedel was a director at management consulting firm McKinsey and Company, where for 15 years he co-led telecom and high-tech practices in North America and Asia.

Riedel's appointment is effective Feb. 28 and he will work from Nortel headquarters in Toronto.

Juniper, meanwhile, has replaced Riedel with Vice President of Corporate Development Spencer Greene. Greene is responsible for all aspects of corporate development, including mergers and acquisitions, and will report to Juniper Chairman and CEO Scott Kriens.

Greene joined Juniper in 1999 through the acquisition of Layer Five, an intellectual property development and licensing company he co-founded. During his six years at Juniper, he has held leadership positions in corporate development and engineering.
