A Taxonomy of Computer Systems and Different Topologies: Standalone to P2P
"I think that in thinking about the excitement around P2P, you should try to look into it deeply and find out why there are elements that are clearly full of promise, and why it clearly has some things that are different than what many people were used to before. You also need to understand why so many different things are called 'Peer-to-Peer' even though they are quite different." By Dan Bricklin. |

Distributed Search in Peer-to-Peer Networks
"JXTA Search is a decentralized peer-to-peer search engine providing a distributed query interface to expose services and content for a network of information providers and information consumers. A query routing protocol (QRP) is used to register content-rich peers with arbitrary peers used as routing hubs. The QRP provides interface definitions for requests and responses expressed in conjunctive normal form using XML-derived syntax. Request resolution is performed by arbitrary peers, called hubs, which resolve requests against indexed registrations for routing to provider peers. JXTA Search occupies a middle ground between the fully centralized Napster model and the fully decentralized Gnutella model." In PDF. From jxta.org. |

Framework for Peer-to-Peer Distributed Computing in a Heterogeneous, Decentralized Environment
"This paper presents a framework for large-scale computations for problems that feature coarse-grained parallelization. The components of this framework are based on Java, which allows for a wide variety of platforms and components, and peer-to-peer communication is provided through the JXTA protocols, which allow for a dynamic and decentralized organization of computational resources." P2P getting down to some serious work
Just a few years removed from the mayhem of music swapping that clogged corporate networks, peer-to-peer technology is growing up and rediscovering its roots as a legitimate concept for distributed computing in corporate environments and the Internet. Network World, 08/19/02. |

Peer-to-peer communications using XML
"XML is a critical ingredient in peer-to-peer information sharing schemes, including grid computing, instant messaging, and Web services. In this article, Anne explores the cutting-edge efforts intended to create a unified P2P fabric based on adaptations of existing XML technology." By Anne Zieger. |

The Chord Project
"The Chord project aims to build scalable, robust distributed systems using peer-to-peer ideas. The basis for much of our work is the Chord distributed hash lookup primitive. Chord is completely decentralized and symmetric, and can find data using only log(N) messages, where N is the number of nodes in the system. Chord's lookup mechanism is provably robust in the face of frequent node failures and re-joins." Site has links to P2P papers. |

The impact of peer-to-peer on data management issues for developers
"Enterprise peer-to-peer technology is still relatively new. But as peer-to-peer becomes more widely known, it will bring changes in how data is managed within enterprises. This article offers developers a look ahead at emerging P2P data management practices, offering insights into how these implementations will differ from conventional database-driven structures of today."
