Access Gateways tutorial

"Access mediation supports the arbitration of call control and signaling between individual networks, resources, users, and services. Access mediation is the next evolutionary step for the advanced intelligent network (AIN). With the growing importance of the Internet, access gateways are a critical component of access mediation. This tutorial presents several application scenarios that utilize an access gateway point between the traditional telephone network and the Internet. First, the tutorial will review general background information on access mediation. As part of this overview, specific information on the important components of access gateways will be addressed. Access gateway-application scenarios will also be discussed. Finally, the tutorial will present several elements of network design that are crucial for a network to support an access gateway." Overcoming Barriers to High-Quality Voice over IP Deployments

"Quality of Service (QoS) issues are critical to the successful deployment of Voice over IP (VoIP) systems. Such impairment factors as latency, jitter, packet loss, and echo must be considered along with the ways in which they interact. The ability of a network to support high-quality VoIP calls and the configuration of various hardware and software parameters are important in ensuring caller satisfaction." Intel white paper.

Security Considerations for Voice over IP Systems

NIST draft: "Lower cost and greater flexibility are among the promises of VOIP for the enterprise, but the technology presents security administrators with significant security challenges. Administrators may mistakenly assume that since digitized voice travels in packets, they can simply plug VOIP components into their already-secured networks and remain secure. Unfortunately, the process is not that simple. This publication explains the challenges of VOIP security for agency and commercial users of VOIP, and outlines steps needed to help secure an organization's VOIP network." In PDF

Security Risk Factors with IP Telephony based Networks

"IP Telephony based networks, which might be a core part of our Telephony infrastructure in the near future, introduce caveats and security concerns which traditional telephony based networks do not have to deal with, have long forgotten about, or have learned to cope with. The security risk is usually overshadowed by the technological hype and the way IP Telephony equipment manufacturers push the technology to the masses. This paper highlights the different security risk factors with IP Telephony based networks." From Sys-Security.com

Voice Signaling in a VoIP World

"There's more to telephony than passing voice: the rest is called signaling. Think of it as command and control for the voice functions. Signaling started with manipulating the loop current on the line between the central office and the phone. Today, signaling inside the PSTN, and on data networks, is all based on messages in packets. Here's a capsule overview of legacy signaling and three types for VoIP: H.323, SIP, and MGCP." From Webtorials.com. Free registration required.

VoIP Bandwidth Calculation

"Calculating how much bandwidth a Voice over IP call occupies can feel a bit like trying to answer the question; 'How elastic is a piece of string?' However, armed with a basic understanding of the parts that make up the whole, the question becomes easier to understand. This White Paper examines the process that turns voice into Voice over IP."
