LaBrea – A New Approach to Securing Our Networks
"This paper has been written to illustrate two of the things that are overlooked with most levels of security implemented to provide a depth of defense: what is happening to the IP addresses on the network that are not being used, and how can these be used to tighten security? If available IP addresses could be used to hold spreading worms or probing systems, then there would be a tangible benefit." SANS Institute, 03/07/02. |

Taxonomy of Computer Worms
"To understand the threat posed by computer worms, it is necessary to understand the classes of worms, the attackers who may employ them, and the potential payloads. This paper describes a preliminary taxonomy based on worm target discovery and selection strategies, worm carrier mechanisms, worm activation, possible payloads, and plausible attackers who would employ a worm." The Spread of the Sapphire/Slammer Worm
Analysis of how the worm spread so quickly: "Sapphire's spreading strategy is based on random scanning -- it selects IP addresses at random to infect, eventually finding all susceptible hosts. Random scanning worms initially spread exponentially rapidly, but the rapid infection of new hosts becomes less effective as the worm spends more effort retrying addresses that are either already infected or immune." |

Virus Throttling
"This paper gives an overview of Virus Throttling, a new technique to limit the damage caused by fast spreading computer worms and viruses. Rather than preventing a machine becoming infected, the technique prevents the virus propagating further from the infected machine. This addresses the two main ways that viruses cause damage: the spread of the virus will be slowed (less machines infected) and the traffic created by the virus will be reduced(less likely to overload network infrastructure)."
