802.11 Security

"802.11 Security covers the entire process of building secure 802.11-based wireless networks, in particular, the 802.11b ('Wi-Fi') specification. The authors provide detailed coverage of security issues unique to wireless networking, such as Wireless Access Points (WAP), bandwidth stealing, and the problematic Wired Equivalent Privacy component of 802.11. You'll learn how to configure a wireless client and to set up a WAP using either Linux or Free BSD. You'll also find thorough information on controlling network access and encrypting client traffic." $24.47.

How Secure is Your Wireless Network?

Ellen Messmer writes: This straightforward easy-to-read book on wireless LAN security delves into the alhabet soup of WLAN standards, including WEP, WPA, LEAP and the newer planned use by the industry of AES in the emerging 802.11i standard. Though this volume authored by Ernst & Young consultant Lee Barken is a good beginning guide to a complicated and fast-moving subject, it lacks the industry-level detail - such as the Cisco and Microsoft battle over the PEAP protocol they once championed together - that will inevitably impact buying decisions.

Wi-Foo, the Secrets of Wireless Hacking

Ellen Messmer writes: Wireless networks based on the 802.11 "Wi-Fi" standard typically suffer from poor security protections and misconfiguration, according to the book's three co-authors, consultants with security firm Arhont Ltd. in the United Kingdom. In fact, the co-authors Andrew Vladimirov, Konstantin Gavrilenko and Andrei Mikhailovsky assert the situation with Wi-Fi security is totally "foo bar'ed," the geek term for "messed up beyond human comprehension." Hence the book's title "Wi-Foo," and in over 550 pages, they explain in technical detail why Wi-Fi is Wi-Foo and possible ways to fix it.
