ABS Plus USB Drive

CMS Peripherals

Price: $279.00
Rating: 3
Ease of use: Power users only

Review:
This external 20G-byte USB hard drive is a great way to expand your computer's storage -- and in conjunction with backup software can be a very efficient way to both secure your system from data loss and transfer data between two systems.

In combination with the included software it can also be used as a complete backup device for your computer. The software contains an option to create a bootable copy of your internal hard disks in the event of a hardware catastrophe that leaves your system inaccessible. The drive is also completely removable and transportable within seconds, unlike internal hard drives. The high-speed USB port also supports much faster data transfer in comparison to floppy, zip, and CD-R drives. Overall, this is a very nice device.

The ABS Plus drive and software was easily installed onto my Windows 2003 Server laptop without any need for additional drivers. I was able to interact directly with the device as a local hard drive almost immediately. It was far easier than adding an additional IDE or SCSI drive to any system notebook or desktop. The software did take a few minutes to configure, but in the end it was definitely worthwhile. The ABS Software was also able to password-protect USB hard drives so that it could not be accessed by anyone who plugged it into their system, however the hardware I tested did not support this feature.
