Gyration Ultra GT Full-Size Keyboard Suite
GyrationPrice: $99.95
Rating: 4
Ease of use: Mainstream customers
Review:
The Gyration Ultra Suite includes a wireless mouse and keyboard. They associate via a RF receiver, which connects via a standard USB interface. The radio range is roughly 20 to 30 feet, and seemed to work well even with line-of-sight obstructions.
I was impressed at the ease of installation and how easily it was to get the keyboard and mouse to associate with the RF receiver. The RF receiver was installed without any additional software drivers, and the mouse and keyboard were set up by pressing a button on each device and waiting no more than three seconds. It took longer to unpack the system than it did to set up.
The GyroTools software application enabled complete customization and shortcuts for both the mouse and the keyboard. The keyboard has 15 hot keys that can be configured to launch or perform virtually anything; by default they are setup for basic Internet, file access, and multimedia functions. The mouse, however, can be configured to perform just about anything as well, by performing specific movements or clicking patterns. The mouse itself has a gyroscopic motion sensor for use off the desktop. It was a little difficult to get used to, but very useful if you are not seated at a table or desk (such as if you're walking around the room giving a presentation). The mouse also has a rechargeable long-life NiMH battery and desktop charging cradle, so you don't have to worry about always replacing batteries. Unfortunately, the keyboard is still limited to its four AA batteries.
Both devices provided some added benefits over more standard PS2 or USB mice and keyboards. Even outside the obvious benefits of being wireless, the software application and keyboard hotkeys can increase productivity and enjoyment for everyday use.
