Net.Worker briefs

  • SMC Networks last week announced its DOCSIS 1.1 certified EZ Connect USB cable modem and an 802.11b Universal Serial Bus adapter. The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 1.1 brings quality of service features, media access control and service flow support for multimedia services and SNMP for remote management. The clip-on USB wireless adapter is the size of a cassette tape and can be attached to a notebook lid or any other place on the desk to optimize the signal. Both are available later this month; the cable modem costs $129, the USB adapter $118.

  • Wildfire Communications recently announced a version of its Wildfire telephone-based assistant geared to small and midsize firms. Similar to the Enterprise Edition, the new e500 manages employee communications through voice and touch commands. Wildfire takes messages, manages contacts, and dials outgoing calls. The system includes call routing and contact management. Pricing and availability are not yet announced.

  • WatchGuard Technologies announced the availability of a Windows XP version of its mobile user VPN client. The client software includes a built-in firewall and encrypted VPN configuration files. Pricing is based on number of users; for instance, 500 licenses cost $1,200.

  • Linksys recently announced the Instant Wireless Presentation Gateway, a device that transmits PowerPoint presentations and other data to monitors, projectors and LCD panels via 802.11b technology. Designed for use in conference rooms and auditoriums, the product should ease the hassle of connecting and reconnecting multiple PCs to projectors and monitors when several users present material in succession, or need to switch among materials quickly. Available now, the Gateway costs $300.
