Y2K Web sites abound
By Nancy Weil Hundreds of Internet sites include information, of varying accuracy, regarding the Year 2000 computer bug. The following list, in no particular order, is a sample of what's out there: -- http://www.senate.gov/~y2k/ -- The U.S. Senate Special Committee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem site, includes speeches and government activities related to the Year 2000 computer bug. -- http://www.senate.gov/~bennett/y2k.html/ -- A link from the home page of U.S. Senator Bob Bennett, a Utah Republican and chairman of the U.S. Senate committee, includes Bennett's speeches on the Year 2000 bug. -- http://www.splcenter.org/ -- Home site of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery, Ala., that tracks hate groups and hate crimes and whose most recent publication, Intelligence Report, features a cover story on extremist reactions to the Year 2000 bug. -- http://www.utne.com/y2k/ -- Alternative monthly publication Utne Reader's Year 2000 report, including a "citizen's action guide." -- http://www.csis.org/ -- Center for Strategic and International Studies includes a link with details about its Year 2000 conference held last June. -- http://www.mille.org/ -- Center for Millennial Studies at Boston University includes overview of millennial reactions, some because of the Year 2000 computer bug and others linked to groups that believe the millennial change will be apocalyptic. -- http://www.cbn.org/y2k/ -- Year 2000 section of the Christian Broadcasting Network's Web site. Although Pat Robertson's group often is portrayed as extremist in its fundamental Christian views, the site provides reasoned advice, including keeping paper records of financial activities and suggests as its main point, "Don't be scared, be prepared. Panicking will hurt you, not help you." -- http://www.yourdon.com/ -- Software engineering consultant and author Ed Yourdon is often quoted, and he contends, misquoted, regarding his thoughts on Year 2000. His site presents his unfiltered, often witty, views. -- http://www.yardeni.com/ -- Ed Yardeni, chief economist of Deutsche Bank Securities in New York, has links to Year 2000 information on his Web site. -- http://www.year2000.com/ -- Peter de Jager was one of the first to sound the Year 2000 alarm in an oft-quoted September 1993 Computerworld article, available at this site run by de Jager, which also includes various other of his writings and assorted links. -- http://www.prepare4y2k.com/ -- Preparation advice, opinion, rumor, speculation and innuendo with links to a range of other Year 2000 sites. -- http://www.SurviveY2K.com/ -- See above, but add exclamation points. -- http://www.josephproject2000.org/ -- One of the numerous Christian groups that have begun to deal with Year 2000 issues. Shaunti Feldhahn, who has degrees from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and the College of William and Mary, started the Joseph Project. The non-profit group is designed to help Christians prepare and respond to potential Year 2000 problems so that they might help their communities. -- http://www.greaterthings.com/ -- Sterling Allan's site includes detailed interpretations of Bible verses, including numerical representations such as "2000." According to e-mail exchanges, Allan believes that God "delights in the advances we have made-having inspired them in the first place-but that he is not pleased with what we are doing with those abilities in some (many) cases." Humans can forestall Year 2000 computer disasters by turning to God, Allan wrote. -- http://www.angelfire.com/ -- Some of the gloomier prognostications on the Internet, predicting total calamity in 2000. -- http://www.garynorth.com/ -- Gary North is variously described as a visionary and an extremist. He tends to fall in with the gloomy crowd regarding Year 2000 prophecy, and his writings are available at his site, as are links to various other millennial sites. -- http://www.cpsr.org/ -- Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility has a link on its Web site for a thorough listing of rumor, speculation and prediction related to the Year 2000 bug, as well as assorted other information. -- http://www.Duh-2000.com/ -- An ongoing contest of the wackiest things people say about the Year 2000 bug.
