Cisco Systems, Inc. yesterday announced the Cisco 12008 Gigabit Switch Router (GSR).
The eight-slot Cisco 12008 switching fabric scales from 10G to 40G bit/sec. The Cisco 12008 fits in between Cisco's 12-slot, 15G to 60G bit/sec 12012 and four-slot, 5G bit/sec 12004 GSRs.
The lowest speed port on the 12008 is OC-3, or 155M bit/sec. The router supports ATM and packet-over-SONET (POS) links.
The Cisco 12008 initially supports IP backbone links at OC-3 and OC-12, or 622M bit/sec. It can scale to handle POS links up to OC-48, or 2.4G bit/sec, Cisco said.
Even though Cisco claims the 12008 can support up to 40G bit/sec - which would allow the switch to handle 250 OC-3s, 64 OC-12s and 16 OC-48s - current four-port OC-3 and single port OC-12 modules only allow the router to support 32 OC-3 POS ports and eight OC-12 POS or ATM interfaces.
Cisco plans to deliver OC-48 modules - either in the form of a single OC-48 port or four OC-12s - this summer. Cisco also plans to increase the port density of the 12008's OC-3 modules.
The Cisco 12008 is available now with prices starting at $19,900.
