Concentric picks up Web hosting expertise

Concentric Network Corp., of Cupertino, Calif., yesterday announced it will pay $15.5 million for InterNex Information Services, Inc.

InterNex is a Santa Clara, Calif.-based Internet service provider that offers dedicated Internet access services with a specialized focus on offering Web hosting services. InterNex currently supports almost 1,000 business customers.

Not only will Concentric gain Web hosting knowhow, but infrastructure assets that are needed for the company's Internet ATM backbone network that supports two data centers.

InterNex has data centers in Santa Clara, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C., Stockholm, Tokyo and Hong Kong. InterNex also has Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) rings set up in northern California. Concentric has data centers in Bay City, Mich., and Cupertino.

Concentric joins a list of ISPs that recently acquired other ISPs to gain Web hosting expertise.

Verio, Inc., a Denver-based ISP, last month announced its acquisition of Internet Servers, Inc. (iServer), a Salt Lake City-based Web hosting service provider. iServer developed its own Virtual Server technology to provide thousands of business users with Web hosting services.

Late last year, GTE Internetworking acquired Genuity, Inc. and last month Frontier Corp., a telecommunications service provider, acquired Global Center, Inc., a Web hosting service provider.
