3Com Corp. announced today it has acquired Toronto-based Lanworks Technologies, to use the company's PC network boot products to develop network interface cards (NIC) that provide desktop management capabilities.
The transaction, valued at $13 million, will be accounted for as a purchase, and 3Com will incur a charge of about $8.4 million for purchased in-process technology in its fourth fiscal quarter. Excluding the charge, the deal is not expected to materially impact 3Com's financial results, 3Com said in a statement.
Lanworks' BootWare products include client-side boot firmware and software, and server-side boot services and management applications. The technologies enable IS staff to automate initial PC configuration, operating system upgrades and disaster recovery, 3Com said.
