As more and more publishers jump on the Internet bandwagon, the Seybold conference has increasingly become a place to find tools for the World Wide Web.

The explosion in publishing across different media - from traditional print to the World Wide Web - spurred Seybold conference organizers to split the conference, which ended here Friday, into two parts: two days for Internet publishing, and another two days for print.

Highlights of product announcements related to Web content creation and distribution included:

  • FileOpen Systems, Inc. launched FileOpen PDF 2.0, which adds new publishing security features such as expiration timers on documents and tracking capabilities with digital-object identifiers. PDF 2.0, priced at $2,500, runs on Windows 95 and NT. The client-side plug-in is available for Windows 95, NT and 3.X, and a Mac PPC version will be available as a free upgrade for current FileOpen users in the second quarter.

  • Inso Corp. announced Version 4.0 of the DynaText Professional Publishing System and companion DynaWeb server, designed to publish electronic documents that are searchable via CD-ROM, LAN or the Web. New features include advanced search features such as thesaurus-based searching, as well as support for Extensible Markup Language (XML) links. DynaWeb is set for release this month and DynaText by the end of April on Windows 95, NT and a variety of Unix platforms. Pricing for the system starts at $50,000.

  • Datazone, Inc. introduced Version 4 of Miramo for Unix platforms and Windows NT. The application is a database publishing tool kit, which uses the FrameMaker formatting engine to produce documents, including HTML documents, automatically. Pricing for a uniprocessor host costs $9,875.

  • Zuno, Inc. announced Z-Commerce, the commerce module for its Zuno Digital Publisher suite. Z-Commerce authenticates, logs and tracks users, and applies different fees under different business models, including subscriptions and transactional charging. The application runs on NT and Sun Solaris, and works with ODBC-compliant databases. Pricing was not immediately available.

  • Trellix Corp. rolled out the Trellix Trelligram Utility, designed to send e-mail with multiple HTML files attached. It is being incorporated into the Trellix 1.0 Web document creation package.

  • NWFusion offers more than 40 FREE technology-specific email newsletters in key network technology areas such as NSM, VPNs, Convergence, Security and more.
