Cisco says Lucent patent infringement suit lacks merit

Cisco Systems, Inc. issued a statement late Friday challenging claims made in a patent infringement lawsuit filed against it by Lucent Technologies, Inc. Thursday.

Lucent's lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Delaware accuses Cisco of violating eight of Lucent's patents related to data networking. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and asks the court to prevent Cisco from using the technology at issue which is used in routers, frame relay networking and ATM equipment.

"We currently believe the Lucent suit has no merit," Larry Carter, chief financial officer at Cisco, said in the statement. "We're also prepared to assert Cisco's intellectual property rights and technology leadership."

Lucent had said it filed the lawsuit after unsuccessfully negotiating a licensing agreement with Cisco for 18 months.
