Cisco Systems this week will roll out a nine-slot Catalyst LAN switch chassis to fill the mid-range of its Catalyst 5X00 line.
The Catalyst 5509 is said to be able to support up to 50G bit/sec of bandwidth, and house up to 38 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 192 10/100 ports. By contrast, the five-slot Catalyst 5505 supports 3.6G bit/sec and up to 98 10/100 ports, and the 13-slot 5500 sports 3.6G bit/sec and up to 32 Gigabit Ethernet and 266 10/100 ports.
Cisco is also expected to unwrap a Network Analysis Module for the Catalyst 5X00. This module will occupy one slot in the Catalyst 5X00 chassis and provide full RMON 1 and 2 monitoring for each port, VLAN and Fast EtherChannel link.
It will also collect NetFlow statistics from the NetFlow Feature Card on the Catalyst Supervisor Engine, sources said.
Pricing and availability for the Catalyst 5509 and Network Analysis Module could not be learned by press time. Cisco declined comment.
