PSI sets pricing for voice over IP

Today's breaking news

PSINet today announced pricing for its new voice over IP service and said it would reveal similar details next week for its managed firewall service.

PSIVoice lets users connect their traditional PBX switches over PSINet's Internet backbone network.

PSINet is provisioning dedicated permanent virtual circuits (PVC) over its backbone, which is based on frame relay and ATM. PSIVoice is based on Ascend Communications voice over IP technology.

The service is priced similarly to conventional tie-line services. PSIVoice connections that support up to 5 simultaneous calls in the US, UK and Canada are $1,595 per month. Medium-size users that need to support up to 10 simultaneous calls in the same countries will pay $2,595 per month.

Users also have to pay a per site installation fee that ranges from $995 to $2,195.

Next week PSINet also plans on announcing the availability and pricing for its Security Central managed firewall service. When PSINet initially announced the service in May the ISP was hoping the monthly service charges would range from $600 to $800, but in fact PSINet was shooting low.

Security Central will be available in two flavors, Premium, which is $1,195 per month and Standard, which is $995 per month.

The Premium service includes real time traffic firewall traffic reports and monthly reporting packages.
