Nuance Communications and a team of other technology companies have formed the V-Commerce Alliance to work on voice-interface applications for the World Wide Web and telephones.
In an announcement today at the Internet World trade show in New York, Nuance said that is has been joined by Motorola Inc., Visa International Inc., BroadVision Inc. and a number of other companies on the project, expected to result in software allowing users to conduct self-service electronic commerce transactions from anywhere, using the Web or a phone.
Besides being aimed at electronic commerce, future voice-enabled applications also are likely to be combined with application servers, packaged software, telephony and hardware and networking infrastructure, Nuance said in a statement.
Nuance will work with Visa on applications for its member banks, and Visa also is contemplating applications for travel planning and corporate purchasing for businesses that use the company's commercial cards. Visa member banks currently are using voice applications for some banking services and for automated bill payment, the companies said.
V-Commerce -- a phrase trademarked by Nuance -- is intended to allow shoppers to complete an entire transaction from gathering information about products to order status and support after a purchase is made from any device that connects to the Internet.
