Las Vegas - MCI WorldCom yesterday announced two network hosting services that take advantage of technology the company acquired from a variety of telecommunications businesses over the last two years.
The services -- Enterprise-Class Hosting and Hosting Professional Services -- allow corporations to outsource the design, installation and management of Internet sites and virtual private networks, the company said in a statement.
With Enterprise-Class Hosting users get network management and integration, security through a firewall service, custom application services, a designated project manager, site monitoring, and an Enterprise Management Team trained on the customer's infrastructure and configuration. The service is available immediately. Pricing is based on the scope and complexity of the project.
With Professional Services MCI WorldCom's Advanced Networks unit offers support services for custom hosting hardware, applications and databases. These are in addition to the core hosting and commerce services that are offered. The service is available for a monthly retainer based on the number of hours of projected usage, with fees starting at $2,500. Engineers can be trained to manage proprietary applications.
Visa uses MCI WorldCom's Professional Services for hosting its Web site, which appears in seven languages, MCI WorldCom said.
The two services are the latest additions to MCI WorldCom's Hosting and Electronic-Commerce unit, formerly the Web hosting business unit of UUNET.
MCI WorldCom Advanced Networks was formed earlier this year from the combined WorldCom subsidiaries of CompuServe, ANS, GridNet and the Web hosting business unit of UUNET. MCI acquired the UUNET unit after selling its Internet business to British telecommunications company Cable & Wireless PLC in order to get regulatory approval for its $40 billion merger with WorldCom, which closed in September.
