Mountain View launches distributed file system
By Deni Connor Start-up Mountain View Data last week announced a distributed file system for data mirroring, back-up and content dissemination that will help enterprise customers and service providers manage data easier. Mountain View Data was started in 1998 by TurboLinux founders Cliff and Iris Miller, and Peter J. Braam to develop file systems and storage management software based primarily on Linux and open source. Dubbed InterMezzo, the software synchronizes active file systems across multiple servers in environments that are only intermittently connected. It is well suited for data replication and synchronization, as well as server mirroring. InterMezzo provides data access in Web and file server environments and can offload backbone traffic in geographically separated data centers. It wraps around an existing journaling disk file system and tracks updates made to folders and files, and then writes log records that detail activities. It stores file data in a local disk or server. InterMezzo will be available in early 2001. Prices are not available.
