UUNET Technologies, a subsidiary of WorldCom, Inc., yesterday announced its UUCast multicast service.

UUNET has deployed more than 50 Cisco Systems, Inc. 4700 modular routers throughout its network to support multicasting services for its customers. The routers support the Internet Engineering Task Force's multicast protocol specifications such as IP Multicast, Internet Group Management Protocol and Protocol Independent Multicast.

UUCast is available in stream sizes ranging from 5K to 128K bit/sec. The lower speed streams are best suited for ticker services such as stock quotes, and the higher speed streams are best suited for audio and video broadcasts.

UUCast is being used by CNN Inter@ctive, Microsoft Corp. and AudioNet, Inc.

The Web hosting division at UUNET also plans to get into the multicast game by hosting live multicast event broadcasts for its customers.

UUCast is available now for $2,200 per month for a 5K bit/sec stream and $10,000 per monthfor a 25K bit/sec stream.
