The FBI has finally caught up with Eugene Kashpureff.
According to published reports, Kashpureff, who in July hijacked the Internet Network Information Center's URL as protest of its "monopoly" on domain name registration, was arrested in Toronto Friday and will be charged with several counts of wire fraud.
In August Kashpureff settled out of court with Network Solutions, Inc., owner of the InterNIC address www.internic.net that was being rerouted to www.alternic.net, in return for a public apology, which he issued to the Internet community. But the FBI issued warrants for his arrest on federal charges.
"We settled with Mr. Kashpureff, case closed," said Chris Clough, director of communications for NSI. Although NSI was contacted by the FBI early on in its investigation, Clough said it had not heard from the investigators since. "We have no involvement in Mr. Kashpureff's current status."
According to reports, Kashpureff was picked up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He is scheduled for a deportation hearing today.
