WASHINGTON, D.C. - FORE Systems this week introduced hardware to multiplex several ATM links on one fiber-optic line, for up to 10G bit/sec of throughput.
The multiplexer works with FORE's ASX-4000 switch, taking in up to four OC-48 (2.4G bit/sec) links and putting the signals onto one fiber. The box will help carriers and enterprises where the number of fiber-optic lines is constrained, the company says.
FORE says the signals can reach up to 65 km, and up to 100 km with amplifying equipment.
The company also introduced wave division multiplexing-capable port cards for the ASX-4000 switch itself. To prep the signals for multiplexing, the cards use 1550-nanometer optics instead of 1310-nanometer optics.
The new hardware will ship at the end of March. FORE says the pricing will add about $90,000 to the cost of an ASX-4000.
