Qwest Communications said it has secured a contract that will be worth $1 billion over the next several years to provide data network services for the Department of Treasury's communications network.
Qwest will initially provide ATM and frame relay services for the Treasury Communications System, a network that interconnects the Treasury and all of its agencies in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the company said in a statement.
Qwest secured the work as part of a subcontract awarded to it by TRW, a contractor to the government and the automotive, aerospace and IT industries.
"We estimate that over the term of the deal, which is about seven years, we will earn one billion dollars," Qwest spokesman Tyler Gronbach said.
Qwest said it has worked with the five regional Bell operating companies in the U.S.-Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, SBC Communications, and U.S. West-to ensure that local access to its network is available for the Treasury's needs.
