Tivoli breaks up management software

Today's breaking news

LAS VEGAS -- Tivoli this week started shipping six separate management tools, all based on the company's framework.

The Tivoli Management Suites address specific management functions, rather than trying to address the range of systems and network management functions that the Tivoli Enterprise framework attempts. Tivoli now has specific products for operations, problem resolution, change and asset management, security, application management and Y2K issues.

Tivoli will continue to offer the Tivoli Enterprise software separately.

Tivoli's rival, Computer Associates, acted similarly last year when it broke its Unicenter framework into smaller pieces called the IT products, such as NetworkIT Pro for network management.

Tivoli's Operations Management Suite includes software for network performance monitoring, data backup and job scheduling. The Problem Management Suite is designed to help network managers track problems in systems and networks. The Change and Asset Management Suite keeps track of a company's equipment. The Security Management Suite lets managers protect IT resources and administer security throughout their companies. The Applications Management Suite is used for deploying and maintaining applications, and the IT Readiness Management Suite is designed for checking corporate gear for Y2K compliance.
