Storage management could get a bit easier for network managers with the anticipated announcement of a parcel of new features for LSI Logic's MetaStor network attached storage hubs.
The enhancements to JetWorks Plus software, which comes with MetaStor, include an access control list (ACL) and Windows NT logon server support. Through ACL administration, users can set file and directory access, as well define access rights for different operating systems - all from a single user interface. The most common ACL attributes are read, write or execute.
The NT logon feature lets the MetaStor storage hub act as a primary domain controller, increasing security and allowing users to create domains without NT servers. MetaStor allows data sharing among NT, Unix, NetWare and Macintosh clients.
The company also recently announced 50G-byte modular drives with a capacity up to 4 terabytes in a single cabinet. The company's MetaStor storage hub family for data center, workgroup or departmental networks features 10/100 Ethernet, dual-attached FDDI and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
Each MetaStor system has hot swappable drives, fans, controllers and power supplies and can address from 90G bytes to 11.08 terabytes of data. The MetaStor hubs also support RAID 5, in which data and parity are striped over a minimum of three drives and is commonly used where data performance is not critical. Parity is used to determine the integrity of the data.
JetWorks Plus software ships at no cost with each MetaStor storage hub. Prices start at $37,525 for a 250G-byte capacity hub with four Ethernet connections.
