Systems Goliath Hewlett-Packard today skipped over inside favorite Ann Livermore to select Carleton (Carly) Fiorina as president and CEO of the reorganized Internet and e-services company. The appointment ends an almost five-month search to replace Lewis C. Platt, who announced his intention to retire as HP's CEO.
Fiorina was president of Lucent Technologies $20 billion Global Service Provider Business. Forbes recently named Fiorina the most powerful woman in America, marking her influence on years of revenue growth and market share at AT&T and Lucent. Fiorina was responsible for Lucent's 1996 initial public offering and the spin-off of the company from AT&T.
Fiorina, 44, is a graduate of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School, Stanford University and the University of Maryland.
Dick Hackborn, a former HP executive and member of the board, will serve as nonexecutive Chairman of the Board. Fiorina will also join the HP board.
Livermore is president and CEO of HP's $15 billion Enterprise Computing Solutions.
HP reported annual sales of $47.1 billion in 1998 and has 123,000 employees worldwide.
