As it inches toward its initial public offering, Red Hat Software targets the high-profile Internet market with its new Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server.

The new package will be aimed at small to midsize businesses looking for an uncomplicated way to get on the 'Net bandwagon. Application service providers (ASP) and ISPs will also be targeted.

The software combines Red Hat Linux 6.0 with the open source Apache Web server and RSA Data Security's 128-bit encryption engine. The E-Commerce Server software package also includes a separate e-commerce directory that includes complete and trial versions of e-commerce software from multiple vendors including Hewlett-Packard.

As Linux emerges from the depths of technogeekdom into the mainstream, users are beginning to realize that its ability to support symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) means that Linux may be a viable, scaleable package for Web commerce. The latest Linux kernel has been broken down into smaller pieces so that it can process different functions at the same time.

The Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server also includes:

? Apache ASP and DAV modules for application development and Web page management.

? The Netscape Roaming Module to enable the use of the Apache Web server as a Netscape Roaming Access server.

? The Squid proxy and cache server.

? The Webalyzer Web server log.

The Red Hat Linux E-Commerce Server sells for $149.99.
