3Com boosts policy management software package

3Com today announced a new version of its policy management software that the company says simplifies management of cell- and packet-based networks.

Transcend Network Control Services V1.1 for Windows NT is a suite of management applications for 3Com's networking systems. It features a Web-based architecture, automatic configuration tools and LAN security policy enforcement capabilities, 3Com says.

Transcend Network Control Services V1.1 lets users configure and manage multidomain VLANs based on LAN Emulation and 802.1Q standards. This simplifies the management of VLAN policies and backbone utilization across the enterprise, according to 3Com. Transcend Network Control Services V1.1 for NT also supports 3Com's AirConnect wireless LAN products, enabling users to manage their wired and wireless networks with a single software package.

Transcend Network Control Services automatically discovers network devices that have embedded Web based management capabilities, such as Web servers, which lets administrators start managing new 3Com devices as soon as they are deployed in the network, the company says. Transcend's Web-based architecture lets administrators manage and troubleshoot their network from a remote Web browser rather than a dedicated management station.

Transcend Network Control Services V1.1 for NT runs on top of Hewlett-Packard's OpenView Network Node Manager Version 6.0, but can also be installed in a standalone mode without the need for a management platform. Devices supported by Transcend Network Control Services V1.1 for NT include 3Com's CoreBuilder 3500 and 9000 switches, the SuperStack II 1100, 3300, 3800, 3900, 9000 and 9300 switches, and NETBuilder II routers and PathBuilderWAN switches. Transcend Network Control Services V1.1 for Windows NT is priced at $9,995 and is available immediately.
