Microsoft has released Version 3.0 of ActiveSync, software that simplifies the exchange of data between computers running Windows CE and other computers, such as desktop PCs and laptops.
With the new version, companies can allow data exchange without having to install dial-up networking on Windows-based computers and without enabling the remote access server on Windows NT or 2000 computers.
Installation of ActiveSync now takes no more than six mouse clicks, Microsoft says. The PC no longer has to be rebooted during the process.
Also new in Version 3.0 is the ability to automatically detect serial devices, which lets one PC serial port work with a variety of peripherals.
The new release can also detect changes in any Windows CE-supported Personal Information Manager software. A customer can shift from Microsoft Schedule+ to Microsoft Outlook without changing ActiveSync's settings.
Another new feature lets handheld users set the speed of the PC connection from 19.2K bit/sec to 115K bit/sec. The software detects the selected port speed and will match it at the PC's serial port. ActiveSync supports serial, infrared, Ethernet and dial-up connections over wire-based and wireless nets.
