Cisco this week announced a strategy to help service providers and enterprises prepare their networks for Web hosting services.
Called ContentFlow, the strategy includes several new or enhanced products to foster global access to the Web and application content. These new and enhanced products perform content tracking, content access and flow management tasks, Cisco says.
ContentFlow is intended to help service providers design and deploy intelligent Web hosting services across routers, switches, servers, caches and Internet appliances, Cisco says. To deliver ContentFlow, Cisco has added Accelerated Load Balancing capabilities to the Catalyst 6000 switch to let service providers offer load-balancing services at throughputs of up to 16G bit/sec.
In addition, Cisco's DistributedDirector and LocalDirector load balancing products now work together with switches and routers to support server selection and to optimize content delivery, Cisco says. Cisco has also developed the Dynamic Feedback Protocol so that server selection can be based on server CPU utilization, application differentiation and user identification. In addition, Cisco developed the Content Verification System, which provides server and application probing capabilities to optimize server and content load balancing decisions, the company says.
Cisco also rolled out new versions of its Cisco Cache Engine 500, appliances that reduce WAN bandwidth usage, improve network performance and increase Web site scalability by caching frequently accessed content. Cisco's new Cache Engine 500 products integrate the Web Cache Communication Protocol for interoperability with other WCCP-enabled products.
ContentFlow is being implemented by service providers Digex and Digital Island, and is the foundation of the NetAid content delivery site, Cisco says. NetAid is an effort by Cisco and other vendors, in conjunction with the United Nations Development Program, to combat extreme poverty.
The NetAid site is www.NetAid.org.
ContentFlow pricing is based on configuration.
