Compuware to buy CACI's network-planning tool group

Today's breaking news

In a move to unite network modeling tools with the collectors that feed them data, Compuware this week revealed it intends to acquire the Comnet product group of CACI International.

CACI's Comnet family of products are designed to help network managers determine what network capacity they will need, while Compuware's EcoScope collects current data about network traffic. The products have worked together in the past, but the acquisition will allow the two functions to be more tightly integrated, says Frank Slootman, vice president of EcoSystems products at Compuware.

The two companies didn't start off looking for an acquisition. They were in talks for an OEM agreement, Slootman says. "We were just asking for the hell of it whether it was possible to acquire these assets."

Turns out it was possible. CACI, whose main business is providing IT services to the government and other organizations, realized that it would either have to develop its own data collection tools to complement the Comnet products or sell the group to a company that already had those tools available.

The deal is valued at $40 million, industry sources say. It is expected to close in two months.
