Today's breaking news

Network Solutions Inc. and MindSpring today announced plans to cooperate on the sale of top-level domain names that end in country codes such as .de for Germany, .fr for France and .jp for Japan.

The agreement calls for MindSpring to market and distribute NSI's country-code top-level domain name registration services to its customers. The services are aimed at businesses that want to register product, brand and company names in the available country-code top-level domains, the release says.

MindSpring already offers NSI's domain name registration services in the .com, .net and .org generic top-level domains.

There are 243 country-code top-level domains, of which 191 are actively registering domain names, according to NSI. Many top-level domains have subdomains, bringing the total pool of active domains to 359.

Of those, 154 are currently classified as unrestricted; meaning a local presence is not required in order to submit an application. The remaining 205 domains are classified as restricted, requiring either a local presence or special documentation in order to submit an application, NSI says.

MindSpring, in Atlanta, can be reached at 404-815-0770 or at www.mindspring.net; NSI, in Herdon, Va., is at http://www.nsi.com.
