Lucent earlier this week started shipping an 11M bit/sec wireless network system designed for connecting corporate campuses and providing access to ISPs.
The WaveACCESS system uses the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band to transmit data over a distance of up to 10 miles. ISPs could use the equipment to move into a community and instantly provide access to the Internet for multiple buildings, according to a Lucent spokesman.
The point-to-multipoint system consists of a central office router that talks to WaveACCESS remote office routers and WaveACCESS PC Card radios for desktop or laptop computers. Alternatively, two remote office routers can be used to simply link two buildings' networks in a point-to-point configuration.
The remote office router lists at $1,395; the central office router is $1,695; and the PC Card adapter is $225.
