Cabletron Systems on Monday took the wraps off a wireless connectivity offering that enables the use of high-bandwidth applications such as voice and video in outdoor environments.

The High Rate RoamAbout lets LAN users establish high-speed connections as fast as 11Mbps between buildings without installing cable or T1 lines. The product set can also be used to extend wired LANs or for the construction of an entirely wireless LAN, according to Cabletron.

Cabletron announced its Indoor High Rate RoamAbout solution in September, including a RoamAbout PC Card and a RoamAbout Access Point, which can be mounted away from a wiring closet on a wall or ceiling.

The outdoor High Rate RoamAbout features support for the 802.11 wireless standard, enhanced 128-bit encryption security, and support for the SNMP standard.

Available this month, pricing for the outdoor High Rate RoamAbout starts at $1,799.

Cabletron Systems, in Rochester, N.H., is at www.cabletron.com.
