Computer Associates International has announced a serverless back-up and restore software line for storage-area networks (SAN).
The standards-based software, ARCserveIT, will be demonstrated at the company's upcoming user conference, CA World, in New Orleans, starting April 9, Computer Associates executives said at a press conference.
The software will allow companies to back up data from disk to tape without using CPU or LAN bandwidth, said Peter Malcolm, Computer Associates' senior vice president for storage solutions. Other products on the market for SAN backup don't alleviate the problem caused by the tremendous amount of server and LAN bandwidth needed to back up data, the executives said. The new CA product line uses the Storage Networking Industry Association's extended copy command standard.
Malcolm and executives from IBM and Pathlight Technology, who also participated in the press conference, said that the software is system-agnostic and will work on hardware from a number of vendors.
ARCserveIT has exceeded back-up speeds of 30M bytes per second, according to Said Rahmani, senior vice president at Pathlight.
ARCserveIT comes in three editions, according to information available at www.ca.com/arcserveit/, where additional details regarding the software also can be found.
The Enterprise Edition is for large companies that use multiple computer operating systems and applications. It works on Windows NT and Unix and has client agents for NT, 98, 95 and 3.1x, and also supports Macintosh, OS/2 and NetWare. It further supports application agents for large databases, messaging, groupware and business applications including Microsoft SQL and Exchange, SAP R/3, Oracle, Informix and Lotus Notes.
The Advanced Edition is for midsize to large companies that need multiple server data protection. It supports Windows Versions 3.x, 95 and 98, NetWare, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix. The Workgroup Edition has a subset of features and functions of the Advanced Edition and is able to back up one server and its connected desktop PCs.
Pricing information was not immediately available.
Malcolm said under questioning that there is little crossover between Computer Associates' storage products and those from Sterling Software, which Computer Associates is in the process of acquiring. He said he is not allowed to talk about the time frame for integrating the company's storage product line with Sterling's products.
