CMGI has formed a partnership with Sun Microsystems and Novell to develop an Internet network to deliver worldwide applications and services, the companies announced Tuesday.
The new venture, called CMGion, will be based in Andover, Mass., and will build data centers around the world that will deliver services over the network, the companies said in a statement.
CMGion will be a wholly owned subsidiary of CMGI, with Sun and Novell owning 8% each, said Steve Adams, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Novell.
"CMGion is creating three to five dozen data centers around the world that will function as one great data center," Adams said. "CMGion will deliver hosting, caching, applications and content. This 'ion' network means that wherever you go worldwide, you can plug into the network and get the same experience as if you were sitting at your PC."
The network will allow corporate Web sites, application and Internet service providers, and proprietary networks to access its services, Adams said.
Sun will contribute appliances, servers, and operating systems. Novell will supply a software platform that will include caching and directory services based on its directory-enabled Net infrastructure model (DENIM), Adams said.
Each company will contribute $20 million to the venture, Adams said.
