Sprint and PacketVideo Monday announced that they have entered into an agreement to develop and sell consumer wireless video software and services.
The agreement stems from a month-long wireless video trial conducted earlier this year by Sprint's PCS Group and California PacketVideo, the companies said in a statement.
Wireless video services, which will include live streaming video, will be transmitted by Sprint PCS' wireless digital network and supported by wireless media technology from PacketVideo, the companies said. Sprint and PacketVideo did not disclose any financial terms to the agreement.By year-end, the companies have plans to launch business and consumer products with live-camera, remote-viewing capabilities, Sprint and PacketVideo said.
Wireless services will be made available over media-enabled PDAs and an Internet-ready Sprint PCS phone. Furthermore, Sprint and PacketVideo also have agreed to collaborate with handset and infrastructure vendors and will explore the development of wireless video technology over upcoming third generation mobile devices.
Earlier this month, PacketVideo announced it had reached an agreement with Lucent's Microelectronics Group to integrate streaming video into next generation mobile devices.
PacketVideo's PVPlatform, which is a wireless streaming video delivery system for handheld devices, is built to work with Lucent's GPRS - General Packet Radio Service - and UMTS/EDGE - Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services/ Enhanced Data for Global Evolution - chip sets. The chip sets will be available during the second half of 2001, according to PacketVideo and Lucent.
