Compaq's board of directors voted Thursday to name Michael Capellas, the company's chief executive officer and president, to an additional role – that of chairman of Compaq's board.

Capellas, 46, takes over from Benjamin Rosen, who at 67 has decided to retire from the board after 18 years. Rosen was awarded the honorary title of chairman emeritus for his services.

Rosen helped to found Houston, Texas-based Compaq in 1982 and became company chairman in 1983. He is also a director of technology companies Capstone Turbine Corp., Ask Jeeves Inc. and idealab Inc.

In a statement, Capellas said it is "a very special honor" to follow in Rosen's footsteps.

Capellas was named president and CEO of Compaq in July 1999.

Compaq, in Houston, Texas, is at www.compaq.com.
