Vitts Networks, a Manchester, N.H., competitive local exchange carrier that provides DSL, T-1 and other services to more than 20,000 end users in New England, is closing shop and laying off up to 300 employees.

A skeleton staff will stay on to maintain service for a short period of time. Vitts customers are being notified this week of the company's decision.

Matthew Davis, an analyst with consultancy The Yankee Group in Boston, says Vitts appeared to be doing well with its regional facilities-based strategy.

"It's just another case of a company that had a solid end-to-end business plan that has had its capital choked off," Davis says. "They've just fallen into the same bucket as the other companies that didn't meet the same criteria."
