Dell and Electronic Data Systems Monday announced plans to jointly market Dell's enterprise PCs and EDS' seat-management services to small and midsize enterprises.
The agreement involves Dell's Latitude notebooks, OptiPlex desktop computer systems and Precision workstations. Dell and EDS plan to target companies that have products from a variety of vendors but that are either beginning to focus on or are almost standardized on Dell products, by emphasizing the convenience of having a single hardware provider. They will target companies with between 1,000 and 10,000 employees.
Dell and EDS will offer a set of services that includes end-user help desk service, asset management, hardware maintenance and configuration management. Optional services including training, remote server monitoring and consulting.
The agreement calls for Dell to sell this seat-management set of services along with its systems, and for EDS to push Dell products along with its Web hosting and desktop management services. Dell has already proposed the seat-management services to 50 accounts, Bill Peterson, director of Dell client services marketing, said.
Services provider EDS has over 130,000 services-related employees. Last year, EDS, with some help from Dell, landed a contract with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps for the management of 360,000 seats.
"The real value is that Dell is extending us to the middle market; we've been focused on the enterprise," Leo Boeckl, vice president, EDS Distributed Systems Services, said. The seat management offered by the two companies will be priced at between $70 and $90 per user, per month, the companies said.
