Global giant Royal Dutch/ShellGroup Friday announced that it has signed a $100 million deal for IBM storage arrays and servers to consolidate and run its enterprise resource planning and e-business applications.

The company is consolidating servers from multiple global locations onto IBM's eServer pSeries (formerly RS/6000) and iSeries (formerly AS/400) systems, as well as its Enterprise Storage System (codenamed Shark). The company said it estimates the server consolidation should save it millions of dollars.

According to Shell, the plan is to group the IBM servers and storage into three "Megacentre hubs" throughout the world, which will run existing SAP and J.D. Edwards applications. In addition, IBM will deploy a number of unspecified e-business applications. Shell said the new MegaCentres will be in Kuala Lumpur, The Hague and Houston.
