Dell will launch an enterprise rack server based on dual Intel Xeon processors in early June worldwide, the company Tuesday disclosed at the Intel Developer's Forum Japan.
The PowerEdge 2650 is a 2U (3.5 inches) size machine supporting DDR DRAM (dual data rate dynamic RAM) and includes a chipset from Serverworks. It will run either Windows 2000 or RedHat Linux 7.2.
It will sit in the middle of Dell's rack server range, replacing the 2550 model that was launched in April last year, and is based on dual Pentium III processors. Below it will be the company's 1U (1.75 inches) size 1650 dual Pentium III processor machine and above it the 4U (7 inches) 6450 quad Xeon processor box, making it the smallest Xeon-based rack server in Dell's line.
The company wouldn't release more details about the machine on show at IDF Japan although a Dell representative said it would be broadly similar in performance to the PowerEdge 4600 dual Xeon processor tower computer, which was launched in February this year. He also hinted that the price would be similar.
The PowerEdge 4600 supports 1.8 GHz and 2.2 GHz Xeon processors and between 512M bytes and 12G bytes of memory, has a 400 MHz system bus and 64-bit PCI-X bus. It costs from $3,900, said Hirokazu Seto, a marketing manager at Dell Computer KK.
Dell was one of several server vendors showing dual and multiple chip Xeon processor-based machines at IDF. The other companies, including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, NEC and Fujitsu Ltd. have already announced their machines or released them.
