Hewlett-Packard and Hitachi are expected to announce as soon as Tuesday that they will exchange APIs for their respective storage arrays, thus enabling network managers to manage them from the same interface.

The agreement will be an extension to an existing OEM relationship by which HP remarkets Hitachi's high-end 9900/9900V Lightning series storage arrays. The new deal will enable Hitachi to manage HP's StorageWorks XP, Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA), Enterprise Modular Array (EMA) and Virtual Array (VA) storage systems from its HighCommand Software management product. In exchange, HP will be able to manage Hitachi's Thunder 9200 arrays.

HP has also signed arrangements with IBM and EMC to exchange management APIs. The company leads the industry in this aspect and claims that soon its products, as well as those of Hitachi, will be Common Information Model (CIM)-enabled.

CIM management is embodied in the Bluefin specification, which both companies endorse. The Storage Network Industry Alliance has taken on the responsibility of getting CIM standardized for storage.
