A number of vendors are now offering to wireless service providers new tools designed to make expanding the reach and management of their wireless LANs easier. HP and Transat Technologies announced last week they are combining their network management software to offer authentication and billing tools for wireless LAN service providers and their customers.

Juniper Networks also announced a software package that promises easier "hot spot" management for carriers. As more service providers try to support nationwide wireless LAN networks, it likely will become more difficult to manage and monitor the services, and bill for them.

Time Warner Telecom, a facilities-based provider of telecom services in major metropolitan markets across the U.S., recently revealed it has rolled out its native LAN metropolitan Ethernet service to 14 markets.

Time Warner's LAN service relies on optical gear from Cisco, including the Cisco ONS 15454 and the Cisco ONS 15327. The LAN service carries data, voice and video traffic over one high-speed wavelength.

Time Warner also announced it has become a Cisco Powered Network program member and will participate in joint marketing and sales initiatives with Cisco. Pricing was not available. www.twtelecom.com
