Opsware makes good on acquisition

Opsware Monday unveiled software to help enterprise network managers automate the discovery and management of network devices.

Opsware Network Automation System (NAS) 4.0 is based on technology Opsware acquired last month when it closed its deal to purchase Rendition Networks and its TrueControl network change and configuration management software. NAS 4.0 discovers network devices and instructs them to deliver configuration data to a central location.

The software works with Opsware's Server Automation System, which collects data about servers and the applications and systems running on them. Opsware's data center automation platform uses a combination of server software and agents to track server and application configuration on distributed machines. The two applications coupled, the company says, can provide a view of underlying servers, applications, software infrastructure, network devices and all their interdependencies.

Opsware competes with BladeLogic, and the product based on Rendition technology will compete with products from AlterPoint, Intelliden and Voyence. The company says NAS 4.0 goes beyond competitive products by offering change automation, compliance management, process automation, security administration and reporting features in addition to network device configuration discovery and management.

NAS 4.0 is scheduled to be generally available March 21, and pricing starts at $20,000 for 50 nodes.
