Fidelia adds business context to mgmt. tool

Company adds root-cause analysis to its business service monitoring software.

Management software maker Fidelia last week updated its flagship monitoring software to now more quickly identity the source of performance problems and determine their impact on business services.

NetVigil 3.6 now includes a new feature that enables the software to group the relationships among applications, servers and network devices making up a business service. The grouping, the company says, enables the software to more accurately identify where a service problem may occur. Using its Layer 2 and Layer 3 topology discovery capabilities, NetVigil can now filter and reduce false alerts and direct IT staff to the most likely cause of a business service performance problem.

"Our container technology enables customers to group different components of an underlying business service together. Now you can nest business containers together and do more in-depth analysis," says Vikas Aggarwal, founder and CTO of Fidelia.

For example, if a database is performing slowly because of disk load on a server or due to high traffic utilization on an intermediate router, NetVigil will identify the disk or the router traffic as the root cause of the service degradation.

Fidelia's application discovery engine also now supports automated discovery of metrics from Citrix, Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server and Active Directory.

NetVigil software discovers network elements to be managed such as Web and application servers, databases and devices. The software comes with an SNMP agent, but Fidelia says NetVigil also will use agents already on the managed device. Each NetVigil monitor pushed out to the managed devices also stores its own database in which it keeps performance data about the device. Network managers administer the product and access the data via a Web interface.

Fidelia competes with the likes of Concord Communications and Micromuse.

Available now, pricing for NetVigil 3.6 starts at $40,000, with an average price of approximately $80,000. NetVigil runs under Solaris, Linux and Windows.
